Hardening Home Wi-Fi Routers & Setting Up Multi-Device Defense
Step-by-step guidelines for securing home gateways, enabling WPA3 encryption, disabling WPS, and configuring encrypted DNS filters.

The Router as the First Line of Defense

Unsecured Wi-Fi routers allow malicious actors to hijack DNS queries, intercept sensitive transactions, or compromise smart IoT devices without touching your endpoint.

Step 1: Change Default Admin Credentials

Access your gateway dashboard (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and replace default administrative credentials with a complex 16+ character password.

Step 2: Upgrade to WPA3-Personal or WPA2-AES

Avoid legacy WEP or TKIP modes. Select WPA3-SAE or WPA2-PSK (AES) with Protected Management Frames enabled.

Step 3: Disable Remote Management & WPS

Turn off Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and disable external WAN management to block brute-force port scanners from reaching your router control plane.

Step 4: Enable Encrypted DNS over HTTPS (DoH)

Configure DNS-over-HTTPS or NextDNS/Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for Families to automatically block phishing domains at the network level.
